Historic school buildings and green spaces at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School

Monmouth School

Monmouth School

Monmouth, Wales

Haberdashers’ Monmouth School enjoys a beautiful setting in South Wales, right in the heart of the historic market town of Monmouth and on the banks of the River Wye. The school is spread across two campuses in and above the town, with plenty of green space, short distances and an atmosphere that, despite more than 400 years of history, feels surprisingly modern and refreshingly liberal. Monmouth is a true all-round school: academically ambitious without being overly focused on one particular area, strong in sport and with plenty of room for music, drama and the arts.

The girls’ and boys’ schools only merged in 2024, and Monmouth is now reaping the practical benefits: facilities and resources that were previously separate are available to everyone, giving pupils access to an impressively broad range of opportunities.

The Details

The Academics

Academically, Monmouth is ambitious without being an academic hothouse – after all, there should still be time to make the most of everything happening outside the classroom. Classes are capped at 23 pupils and are often considerably smaller, while Mathematics and English are also taught in ability groups. Teachers are very approachable, with additional support available through small-group tutoring and one-to-one sessions. Lessons tend to be interactive rather than teacher-led, with plenty of group work, discussion and exchange of ideas. The school is particularly strong in Mathematics, the Sciences and History. In the Sixth Form, Psychology and Business are among the most popular subjects, while Psychology & Criminology are two options you will not find at every British boarding school.

International pupils may also be interested in the one-year Sixth Form Foundation Year, which combines six GCSEs with additional English-language support, as well as a one-term English Immersion Programme.

Languages Taught

French, German and Spanish.

The Boarding

Boarding at Monmouth is distinctly international: around half of the boarders come from more than 20 different countries, with European pupils forming the largest international group. Pupils live across six boarding houses; in the Senior School, rooms are shared by two to five pupils, while Sixth Form students have single en-suite rooms. Weekends offer a varied programme of sports, trips and activities.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Thanks to its location right on the River Wye, rowing has traditionally been one of Monmouth’s great strengths. Rugby is another major focus for boys, while hockey and netball are particularly strong for girls; cricket is also played to a high standard. The quality of the school’s sporting facilities is reflected in the fact that the Welsh women’s national rugby team uses them for training.

Beyond sport, Monmouth has a remarkably strong creative side. Fashion, Design & Textiles is particularly unusual: Professor Jimmy Choo is a patron of the programme and regularly visits the school to work with pupils. Through its close connection with the Jimmy Choo Academy in London, pupils also gain an insight into the professional world of fashion and have opportunities to travel to London for workshops and events.

Weakness

With the school spread across two campuses – one in town and one up on the hill – pupils either do a fair bit of walking during the school day or take the shuttle bus. For some, it is a little extra workout; for others, more of a nuisance.

Location

The small town of Monmouth, with around 11,000 inhabitants and a lovely setting on the River Wye, feels manageable and safe – a place where teenagers can enjoy a little independence, while the livelier city life of Newport and Cardiff is still within easy reach. From Newport, London is just 1.5 hours away by train.

Our Opinion

Picture-perfect school meets a down-to-earth atmosphere: an open and liberal school in a beautiful setting, with plenty to offer.

Our Insider Tip

Monmouth was named the UK’s first “Bee Town”, with plenty of wildflower areas specifically designed to create habitats for bees and other pollinators. Fittingly, pupils can also try their hand at beekeeping at school, help look after the school’s own bee colonies and even build beehives themselves.
