Framlingham College

Framlingham College

Framlingham, England

Framlingham College is located in the beautiful county of Suffolk, in the heart of England and is known to us as a particularly inclusive and down-to-earth school. In recent years, it has made great strides in sport, especially in boys’ and girls’ hockey. A solid academic offering, good music and an excellent design and technology department make Framlingham College an appealing choice. Its lovely rural setting overlooking Framlingham Castle is another standout feature.

The Details

The Academics

Framlingham College is not particularly selective academically, but still delivers very respectable exam results. In 2024, 44% of pupils achieved grades 9–7 in their GCSEs, and 25% received A grades at A-Level – solid performance!

For BTECs, Framlingham College offers Music, Sport, Computer Sciences and Business Studies.

Languages Taught

English as a Foreign Language, French, Latin and Spanish.

The Boarding

More than half of all pupils are boarders.

The school has seven boarding houses – four for boys and three for girls. They are cosy, though not all were fully up to date during our last visit to Framlingham College.

Pupils typically share rooms in twos or threes.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

The main sports at Framlingham College are rugby, hockey, netball and cricket – with hockey standing out in particular. The school has been making headlines, with talent scouts recently recruiting two girls for the England team. For a school of Framlingham’s size, that’s a truly impressive achievement! Other popular sports include tennis, riding, shooting, swimming, badminton, basketball and squash.

Framlingham College also has a very strong creative offering. We were especially impressed by the school’s design and technology department, where we watched a group of pupils building an electric go-kart – fantastic! The head of music, Lucy Bloore, is full of energy, open to new ideas and deeply committed to her pupils. The musical range at the school is remarkable – everyone is encouraged to find their own path.

Creativity knows no bounds here: painting, drawing, printmaking, textile and fashion design, animation, 3D modelling, videography, photography, sculpture and ceramics are all part of the programme.

Weaknesses

The food was a bit of a letdown during our last visit to Framlingham. We have informed the school.

Location

In the heart of Suffolk’s gentle rolling countryside, Framlingham College sits right next to the striking silhouette of Framlingham Castle – a medieval fortress that rises majestically above the town.

Our Opinion

A great choice for well-rounded pupils with a penchant for hockey who are looking for a lovely, less traditional boarding school.
