Stonyhurst School is a moderately selective school. The school averaged 35 points in the IB in 2024 and achieved a very good 35% 9-7 grades in the I/GCSEs and 28% A-grades at A-Level. The school invests a lot of time in lending academic support, especially with its popular evening academic clinics.
Stonyhurst School cleverly integrates artefacts of its incredible heritage into the curriculum. History classes are brought to life with the school's collection of Sir Thomas More's hats and art classes with original paintings by Rubens and Turner!
Language-wise there is German, French, Spanish, Greek and Latin on offer.
66% of pupils board. Boarding accomodation is traditional and with beautiful views over the school's stunning grounds. All 6th formers have single rooms.
Exeat weekends exist but pupils can stay at the school.
The school's Jesuit values are in its DNA and while this is a school open to all religions, essential tenants like helping each other, kindness and hard work to excel shine through.
Stonyhurst School has a national reputation for great sports. Rugby, hockey, swimming, badminton, tennis and basketball are especially strong.
Art is amazing here. Stonyhurst School was awarded “Artsmark Gold” Status for the breadth, depth and quality of its creative offer for a reason. The school has its very own artist-in-residence who oversees pupils' progress in photography, textiles, DT and fine art
Dance and drama are also very strong here. Dance genres from street to ballet are on offer. At least six major theatre productions every year, some of which achieve nationally recognised awards.
The IB attracts international pupils, which in itself is great. However in recent years we've had German families complain about the large numbers of German pupils at the school.
