Downside School
Stratton on the Fosse, England
Downside School, set in picturesque Somerset, is known for its spiritual focus and deeply rooted values. It is held in high regard especially by Catholic families, yet it warmly welcomes pupils of all faiths and backgrounds. Here, young people find the perfect balance between academic excellence, personal growth and spiritual community – a place where education and values come together.

The Details
The Academics
Downside School impresses year after year with strong exam results. In 2024, 39% of pupils achieved grades 9–7 in their GCSEs, and 39% of A Level pupils were awarded an A. The recently opened Sixth Form Centre provides a modern, light-filled space that offers ideal conditions for both academic and personal development.
Pupils with learning difficulties also receive comprehensive support at Downside School.
Languages Taught
German, English as a Foreign Language, French, Latin and Spanish.
The Boarding
Two thirds of the pupils are boarders, which gives Downside the character of a full boarding school. The six boarding houses are cosy, though some are in need of renovation. Pupils usually share a room with one or two others, which strengthens the sense of community and encourages close friendships.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
The combination of small size, a high number of boarders and the school’s Catholic identity gives Downside School an especially strong sense of community. Every pupil is warmly welcomed and well supported!
Sport is an integral part of daily life, and the range of activities is impressive given the school’s modest size. Rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, rounders, aerobics, athletics, badminton, fencing, squash, swimming... the list goes on!
Given the school’s spiritual foundation, it almost comes as no surprise that the music provision is excellent. Downside School has a very good orchestra, numerous bands, an outstanding choir, and over half of the pupils play at least one instrument.
Weaknesses
At the moment, there are no weaknesses we are aware of.
Location
Downside School is located in the idyllic West English county of Somerset, just 25 minutes from the city of Bath.
Bristol - 50 mins by car
A friendly, fairly small school with strong sport and music provision and a Christian foundation that warmly welcomes everyone.
Downside School may officially be a Catholic school, but that should not deter atheists or those of other faiths.
