The Ryde School is non-selective. All students are given tutorial support; mentors are responsible for students' academic and personal progress as well as their psychological well-being. Ryde School offers scholarships to students in the fields of academic excellence, sports, music, choral singing, and sailing. The scholarship amounts are at the discretion of the school's headteacher.
For boarding students, the 17-acre school grounds offer two large houses, all with a wonderful sea view, and a small Georgian townhouse outside the school grounds called Spinnaker, where around 10 sixth formers live almost independently. Around one third of the boarding school students come from Asia, one third from the UK and one third from various European countries and the USA.
Up to Year 10, the students live in the beautiful Victorian Villa Milfeld, which has just been fully renovated and refurbished. Students stay in double or triple rooms, most of which have en-suite bathrooms. The heart of the boarding house is its designer kitchen, but the common rooms also contribute to a cosy and familial atmosphere.
The senior students live in Centenary, a purpose-built and architectural award-winning boarding house with breathtaking sea views. The double and single rooms have their own bathroom and some also have balconies. Here, too, the common areas provide a convivial atmosphere, but there are also several quiet areas for studying.
The school does not have exeat weekends.
The Ryde School is a modern and down-to-earth educational institution that offers an unrivalled island location with great connections to the mainland and London, just two hours away.
All students receive individual support and are offered a wide variety of study options, especially in the area of languages. The fully renovated and refurbished boarding houses with sea views are another argument that clearly speaks in favour of Ryde.
General water sports and track and field are focal points. In classic sports, the boys focus on hockey, rugby and cricket, while the girls focus on hockey, netball, cricket and rugby. Other sports for both sexes include football, basketball, batting, croquet, squash, golf, swimming, rowing and tennis. Sports trips have previously taken students to South Africa, Malta and Argentina. Arguably Ryde's greatest strength is its outstanding sailing programme. Newcomers to sailing through to experts get their money's worth sailing the school's own fleet, which consists of Fireflies, RS Visions, RS Fevas, Picos and a new RIB. Ryde enjoys an excellent reputation at national and international sailing competitions.
Despite the island location, there is a wide range of activities on offer at the weekends. In addition to free access to the sports facilities, vegetable garden, beehive and other school facilities, boarders can choose from excursions, courses, clubs and projects such as Model United Nations and much more. No wonder 90 percent of Ryde's boarding students stay there on weekends.
We'd ideally like a few more boarders. The existing boarders are very well integrated into the school community, however.
