Wellington College
Crowthorne, England
Wellington College is nestled within 400 acres of parkland in the verdant Crowthorne, Berkshire. The entrance itself, passing through the historic archway known as the "Kilometre," is an experience: historic buildings, expansive lawns, and an impressive chapel. The school is a prime example of the modern British boarding school. It boasts academic excellence, outstanding sports (rugby is almost a religion here, but far from everything), and an extracurricular programme that leaves nothing to be desired. If you're considering Eton, Harrow, or Charterhouse, Wellington should definitely be on your shortlist.

The Details
The Academics
Wellington College is one of the most selective schools in the country, consistently delivering top results. In 2024, two-thirds of all A-Level grades were an A, and students achieved an impressive average of 38 out of 45 points in the IB. They also excelled at GCSEs, with four out of five grades in the 9–7 range.
Wellington College ranks among the strongest academic schools in the country—not just for its grades but especially for its outstanding teaching staff. Many teachers are not only passionate educators but also conduct research alongside their teaching, working on master’s or doctoral theses, which truly shines through in the classroom.
But Wellington is about more than just grades. The school is a pioneer in modern teaching and learning methods: discussions instead of lectures, round tables, digital devices in every lesson, a strong wellbeing programme, and a genuine commitment to personal development. The goal is to cultivate curious, agile, and interesting young people—not exam machines.
Languages Taught
French, German, Greek, Latin, Spanish and Mandarin.
The Boarding
Around 80% of pupils board, spread across 17 individually styled houses. Most board during the week, and the campus noticeably empties out on weekends. Anyone interested in Wellington should definitely visit several houses—each has its own unique style, charm, and daily rhythm.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Wellington College offers one of the best extracurricular programmes we know. Sports, arts, music, clubs, community engagement – hardly anywhere else is the range as extensive as here. Over 70 clubs, a dedicated radio studio (“Duke Box”), a TV editing studio, journalism projects, charitable activities every Wednesday, and, of course, legendary events like the “Battle of the Bands.”
Wellington is clearly a top sports school with incredible facilities and a programme that truly covers everything. From rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, golf, swimming, climbing, and riding to polo and triathlon, you can try it all here, either just for fun or at an elite level. For rugby fans: rugby is part of Wellington’s DNA.
The Annenberg Performing Arts Centre is not only an architectural highlight—its circular design is inspired by ancient amphitheatres. It houses an auditorium with over 900 seats, a second theatre with 350 seats, a black box studio, a green room, and state-of-the-art stage and sound technology.
Music plays a central role in school life. Nearly half the pupils play an instrument, compose their own pieces, make use of music production facilities, or record tracks in the school’s own recording studio affectionately called “Shabby Road.” There are numerous choirs, orchestras, bands, and ensembles. Performances take place regularly, whether in concerts, competitions, in the chapel, or in small sessions at the school café.
The art programme is exceptionally well established too. Impressive student works hang all over the campus. In the light-filled art centre, pupils can experiment with painting, drawing, sculpture, textile design, and photography. The programme is supplemented by workshops, masterclasses, and creative student initiatives such as art history and architecture clubs.
Weaknesses
The strong rugby culture shapes school life—something many appreciate, though it’s not for everyone.
