The Essentials: How to win a place at a top UK boarding school

Getting into a top UK boarding school comes down to five key factors: applying well in advance, achieving strong academic results, writing a compelling personal statement, making a strong impression at the Assessment Day and preparing thoroughly for the entrance test. At von Bülow Education, we have successfully placed students at schools including Sevenoaks School, Wellington College, Eton College and Wycombe Abbey School over the past few years. If you are considering this route for your child, we would be delighted to guide you through the process.

When is the right time to apply?

Applications to the UK’s top boarding schools generally begin two years before the intended year of entry – and for entry to Eton College in Year 9, as much as three years in advance.

No matter how suitable a child may be, a deadline is a deadline. Once it has passed, the chances of securing a place are significantly reduced. The most sought-after schools receive hundreds of applications each year for a limited number of places and therefore operate strict admissions deadlines, from which they rarely deviate.

Families should therefore check the relevant deadlines as early as possible. Waiting lists do exist, but the chances of ultimately securing a place through them tend to be slim.

What do top UK boarding schools look for?

When considering an application, schools such as Eton look at several factors: academic ability, the applicant’s personality and talents and – something that can seem slightly unfamiliar to German families – the contribution they are likely to make to the school community.

School reports, entrance tests, interviews and the personal statement all play a part in the final admissions decision.

What grades are required?

Top boarding schools expect very good grades, but they do not necessarily have to be outstanding across the board. Schools consider an application as a whole, as a candidate’s suitability is about much more than academic results alone.

“Even the brightest students have an occasional bad result, and schools understand that,” says Ferdinand Steinbeis, Managing Director at von Bülow Education. One weaker grade on a school report is therefore not necessarily a deal-breaker. A strong personal statement, interview and entrance test can all help to balance the overall picture.

Not all subjects carry the same weight either. Mathematics, sciences and English generally receive greater attention than foreign languages, humanities or creative subjects.

What makes a good personal statement?

The personal statement is an important opportunity for applicants to stand out. A successful statement should engage the reader, be interesting and well written, and convey a genuine sense of the applicant’s personality. Hobbies and interests should be described with enthusiasm, alongside the reasons for wanting to attend the school.

Crucially, the statement must genuinely be the applicant’s own work. Schools are very good at recognising when an adult has had too much input and, in extreme cases, this can even jeopardise an application.

In our experience, a particularly strong personal statement can sometimes help to compensate for a less-than-perfect grade.

How important are talents and contributing to the school community?

Top UK boarding schools are not simply looking for academically strong students. They want young people who will take an active part in school life and bring their own interests and enthusiasm to the community.

Music, sport, drama, debating, art and academic projects can all play an important role, as can social engagement and personal initiative.

The aim is not to demonstrate involvement in as many activities as possible. Schools are much more interested in applicants who pursue their interests with genuine enthusiasm and can show how they might contribute to the school community in the future. It is often this combination of personality, commitment and academic ability that distinguishes a successful application.

What happens at an Assessment Day and interview?

The Assessment Day is a key stage in the admissions process at many top boarding schools. If the initial application and school reports are successful, candidates are invited to visit the school – reaching this stage is already a significant achievement.

The format varies from school to school. Eton, Wycombe Abbey and Wellington hold Assessment Days during which applicants may sit an entrance test, be interviewed by individual teachers and senior members of staff, and take part in lessons. At Sevenoaks, candidates are given a tour of the school followed by an interview.

The admissions interview is particularly important. This is the candidate’s opportunity to make a strong impression. Schools want to understand how applicants think, how confidently they communicate in English and whether they can express and support their own views convincingly.

How should I prepare for the entrance test?

All top boarding schools use entrance assessments to evaluate academic ability. Depending on the school, this may be the school’s own entrance examination or UKiset, a standardised assessment that evaluates English language skills, reasoning and academic potential.

Some boarding schools require applicants to sit their tests at the school itself. Where there is flexibility, however, we recommend avoiding taking the test on the same day as the school visit. Visiting a school and meeting teachers and admissions staff is demanding enough without adding an entrance examination to the same day.

Many schools maintain that applicants cannot – or should not – prepare for these tests. At von Bülow Education, we take a different view. Preparation helps students identify areas in which they may need additional support and, just as importantly, gives them greater confidence on the day of the test.

Where the school allows it, we therefore recommend discussing whether the student can visit the school first and complete the test separately afterwards.

What are the chances of securing a place?

The chances of gaining a place at a top UK boarding school vary considerably depending on the school, the age of entry and the individual applicant cohort. As the most sought-after schools receive considerably more applications than they have places available, there is no single admissions success rate that applies across the board.

What matters instead is approaching the application strategically: starting the process early, identifying schools that are genuinely suitable for the individual student and preparing each part of the application carefully. This is precisely where von Bülow Education can help.

What does boarding school consultancy include?

Boarding school consultancy supports families throughout the entire process, from the initial conversation through to accepting a place. This includes identifying suitable schools, preparing the application documents – including the letter of motivation, references and school reports – preparing for entrance tests and interviews, and providing ongoing support during the student’s time at school through a Guardian Service.

An honest assessment of a student’s individual chances is just as important as being prepared to advise against a particular school if we believe it may not be the right fit. Our aim is not to raise unrealistic expectations, but to give each family the strongest possible chance of a successful application.

Applying to a top UK boarding school is a demanding process, but with careful preparation it is an entirely realistic ambition for many families. Starting early and understanding the particular requirements of the British admissions process gives applicants the best possible foundation for success.
