Pangbourne College

Pangbourne School

Pangbourne, England

Pangbourne College is a long-established yet refreshingly unpretentious and relatively small boarding school that has very much retained its own distinct character. Originally founded with a maritime background, this heritage and outlook are still clearly felt today: a strong sense of community, responsibility and togetherness shapes daily life. And, naturally, water-based sports such as sailing – and particularly rowing – play an important role.

The Details

The Academics

Academically, Pangbourne is broadly positioned: alongside traditional subjects such as mathematics, the sciences, English and history, pupils can also choose more practical options such as BTECs in sport, media or business, as well as creative subjects ranging from art to photography. This is complemented by a modern concept of “micro-credentials” – smaller additional qualifications, for example in first aid or AI, which enhance pupils’ CVs and prepare them for life after Pangbourne.

The Boarding

In 2025, the school replaced its former boys’ and girls’ houses with co-educational houses for Years 7 to 13. There is a particularly warm and family-oriented atmosphere. At the same time, there is a clear focus on independence: ironing, doing laundry and taking responsibility for one’s own space are all part of everyday life here.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

In sport, the school is consistently strong at both regional and national level, with particular strength in rugby, hockey and especially rowing (including successes at Henley). The creative side is equally impressive: a well equipped Music Centre with a recital hall, recording suite and three Steinway grand pianos, alongside a wide range of performance opportunities from Big Band to Marching Band. Art, design and drama benefit from modern studios, a photography darkroom and a clearly forward-thinking approach within design technology.

Weakness

Around 10% of boarders are international, which may feel a little too British for some families.

Location

Set in the charming village of Pangbourne in West Berkshire, right on the River Thames, the school offers a calm, nature-filled atmosphere, while London is surprisingly accessible in just 45 minutes.

Our Opinion

The school succeeds in catering equally well to a wide range of talents, abilities and needs, appealing to children with very different profiles.

Insider Tip

Maritime tradition also lives on in the language at Pangbourne College: dorm rooms are referred to as “cabins”, kitchens as “galleys” and houses as “divisions”.
