Oswestry School

Oswestry School

Oswestry, England

Oswestry is an exceptionally friendly and warm-hearted school, with passionate teachers and excellent learning support. While the campus and facilities aren’t the most cutting-edge, the school puts enormous effort into supporting every pupil in their individual projects. Its location close to the Welsh border also means endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

The Details

The Academics

Oswestry is proudly non-selective – and makes no apologies for it! Here, qualities such as character development, creative confidence and kindness are valued just as highly as academic potential. In that light, the 2023 exam results – 30% A grades at A level and 35% 9–7 at GCSE – are highly respectable.

The school provides excellent academic support, including for pupils with learning difficulties – a real strength.

Languages Taught

English as a Foreign Language. French and Spanish.

The Boarding

Around 36% of pupils are boarders. Most share a room with one or two others, and the three boarding houses are warm and welcoming. Houseparents are known for being especially friendly and supportive.

Weekends are anything but dull: the school organises trips to cultural and sporting events, camping expeditions and creative workshops.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Oswestry’s outstanding academic and pastoral support, combined with its warm, welcoming atmosphere, are a real strength. Few schools put in quite as much effort here!

The school’s outdoor programme is varied and excellent. Pupils make full use of the terrain for mountain biking, canoeing, white-water kayaking, climbing, caving and sailing – building confidence and resilience along the way.

Weaknesses

At the moment the boarding community is relatively small, but Oswestry goes out of its way to integrate boarders and day pupils. The result? Strong friendships that form quickly and naturally.

Location

Oswestry School is located in the historic market town of Oswestry, just a few minutes from the Welsh border. The town is known for its charming streets, small cafés, and independent shops. Its proximity to Wales offers stunning landscapes such as the Berwyn Mountains or Snowdonia National Park, perfect for weekend trips and outdoor adventures. At the same time, Oswestry is well connected: Chester and Shrewsbury are easily accessible, and Birmingham is only about an hour away.
