Just getting to Mount Kelly School is a bit of an adventure – it’s located right on the edge of the wild Dartmoor, in the charming town of Tavistock. Mount Kelly is especially renowned for its outstanding swimming programme, which has produced several Olympians. Equally attractive are the outdoor opportunities: climbing, kayaking, hiking, camping – some pupils even train here for the legendary Ten Tors, a grueling march across Dartmoor.

The Academics
Mount Kelly School offers both GCSEs and A Levels and is not highly selective academically. Nevertheless, the results are impressive: in 2024, 31 percent of pupils achieved A grades at A Level and 38 percent grades 9 to 7 at GCSE. These achievements are partly due to the favourable teacher-pupil ratio of 1 to 10 and the dedication of the teaching staff.
For practical-minded pupils, Mount Kelly offers various BTEC courses, including Sports Coaching, Applied Science and Performing Arts. These programmes combine theory with practical application and provide a valuable alternative to traditional A Levels – ideal for pupils who prefer hands-on learning or want to avoid exam pressure.

English as a Foreign Language, French and Spanish.
The Boarding
More than half the pupils board. The four boarding houses have recently been renovated and offer modern accommodation. A particular highlight is the common rooms, used by both boarders and day pupils, which help to strengthen the sense of community. Most pupils share rooms with one or two housemates, creating a familial atmosphere.

Strengths
Mount Kelly School offers an exceptionally diverse outdoor programme. Thanks to its own centre, Simply Outdoors, pupils can experience activities such as climbing, caving, horse riding, mountain biking, canoeing, sailing and wild camping. These experiences foster self-confidence, teamwork and a spirit of adventure. Programmes like the Shackleton Programme complement the offering and enhance pupils’ personal development.
In swimming, Mount Kelly is among the best schools in the country. With a 50-metre Olympic pool and an elite squad of around 180 swimmers, the school has produced over 100 international swimmers, including several Olympic medalists.
What really sets Mount Kelly apart is its warm and supportive atmosphere. The school places great emphasis on individual support and creates an environment where pupils quickly feel at home. Here, not only academic excellence is pursued, but also the holistic development of each individual is encouraged.
