Millfield School
Street, England
Millfield School is one of the most modern schools in southern England and undisputedly number one when it comes to sport at British boarding schools. Whether swimming, riding, tennis, rugby or cycling – the facilities, coaching and achievements speak for themselves. But beyond sport, Millfield offers a modern, versatile learning environment where pupils receive individual support and a broad education. The modern campus, extensive extracurricular programme and focus on personal development make the school a true all-rounder.

The Details
The Academics
Millfield School offers a broad educational programme with GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs. Although the school is not highly selective academically, the 2024 results are impressive: 47 percent of pupils achieved grades 9 to 7 in GCSEs, and 31 percent earned A grades at A Level.
Learning support – especially for dyslexia, dyspraxia and similar challenges – is very good and provides valuable assistance, particularly to pupils who are talented in sport but academically less strong. Despite the holistic support, the clear focus at Millfield is on sport.
Languages Taught
German, English as a Foreign Language, French, Latin, Mandarin and Spanish.
The Boarding
Around three quarters of the pupils board. The 19 boarding houses are all modernised, cosy and well equipped. Pupils usually share twin rooms, moving to single rooms from Year 13 onwards.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Hardly any school in the UK can match Millfield in sport! With 25 sports offered and over 50 highly qualified coaches, including Olympians and former professional athletes, as well as its own team of physiotherapists, Millfield is regarded as the leading sports school in Britain. The athlete programmes combine elite sport, academic education and personal support – aiming to prepare pupils optimally for careers in professional sport or university programmes worldwide.
The school maintains close partnerships with clubs and national sports associations and sees sport as an integral part of personal development. Flexible multi-sport pathways allow pupils to switch between different disciplines. In addition to traditional sports, karate, fencing and clay pigeon shooting are on the programme.
Anyone who thinks Millfield is only about sport misses half the story. Theatre, art, music and design are at least as impressive here – with studios, stages and galleries more commonly found in art colleges. Pupils rehearse their own compositions, dance to Beatles songs, or exhibit their work in the renowned Atkinson Gallery – all at an astonishingly high level.
Weaknesses
Choosing Millfield means accepting that you’re joining a boarding school with a very strong sporting focus. If this doesn’t resonate with you, other schools may be a better fit.
Location
London Heathrow Airport is about two hours away by car.
It’s a dream for pupils who want to develop their talents in multiple areas and are open to trying new things alongside their main sports.
Millfield is bigger than Monaco – no joke – and was originally founded to educate the son of an Indian maharajah. The school’s international, individual ethos still shapes it today.
