Bromsgrove School
Bromsgrove, England
Bromsgrove School is located in the town of the same name, just under an hour from Birmingham. It ranks among the top sports schools in the UK, has an excellent academic reputation, and also offers strong programmes in art and music. Pupils are highly engaged in extracurricular activities, and sixth formers in particular enjoy a great deal of freedom in shaping their daily school life. At the same time, the school remains refreshingly down-to-earth, and pupils benefit from being part of an open-minded, inspiring community that truly feels like home.

The Details
The Academics
The exam results at Bromsgrove School speak for themselves. In 2024, pupils achieved an outstanding 62% grades 9–7 in their GCSEs, 60% A grades at A-Level, and an impressive IB average of 38.9 out of 45. That deserves real credit. IB classes are small, typically around a dozen pupils, creating a calm and focused learning environment. Teachers are always available for questions – even on weekends. There's no Monday-to-Friday mentality here; learning is simply part of life.
Languages Taught
English as a Foreign Language, Latin, German, French, Spanish, Russian and Mandarin.
The Boarding
The school has five boarding houses: two for boys, two for girls, and a dedicated Sixth Form house. Weekends are busy with sport, music, tutoring and trips. The houseparents provide strong support, helping pupils settle in quickly and feel at home. Under the leadership of a forward-thinking headmaster who gives pupils a real voice, creative and critical initiatives are actively encouraged.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
As one of the top ten sports schools in the country, Bromsgrove’s sports facilities are – as you’d expect – outstanding. They include a large indoor arena with retractable seating for 400 spectators, where the national indoor hockey finals are held. Boarders can also use the swimming pool and fitness centre at weekends. The range of sports on offer is broad and of high quality. Alongside elite rugby training, the school also brings home trophies in other disciplines – particularly hockey and cricket for boys, and hockey, netball and athletics for girls.
The fact that the average IB score last year was 40 points is well worth highlighting. Just as noteworthy, however, is the school’s commitment to recognising and supporting all kinds of talent. In addition to the IB, Bromsgrove also offers more practically oriented qualifications such as BTECs – a rare and commendable approach for a school of this calibre.
Weaknesses
For introverted or shy pupils, the size of the school might feel overwhelming at first. But everyone is seen, supported and quickly becomes part of the wider school community.
Location
Bromsgrove School is located in the heart of the welcoming Midlands town of Bromsgrove.
This is a fantastic school for academically able pupils who are active, independent and curious, and who are not afraid of variety and challenge.
We’re big fans of Housman Hall, the Sixth Form boarding house where boys and girls share communal spaces, cook together, and enjoy a real sense of independence.
