Felsted School

Felsted, England

Felsted School in Essex, just an hour by train from London, is a true showcase of traditional English boarding school life. A beautiful campus with extensive sports fields, dedicated teachers, a strong boarding community and a long list of exciting extracurricular activities. What impressed us most: the school looks far beyond graduation. With great commitment, Felsted prepares its pupils not only for university but also for successful careers and the business world – through specialised programmes, internships and targeted support.

The Details

The Academics

Considering that Felsted School is not particularly selective, the exam results are genuinely impressive. In 2024, nearly 40% of pupils achieved grades 9–7 in their GCSEs and 33% received A grades at A-Level. The average IB score was 35 points – five points above the global average. Respect!

In addition to a strong language offering, subjects like Economics and Business Studies are especially popular.

Languages Taught

German, French, Spanish and Latin.

The Boarding

More than three-quarters of pupils are boarders, some of them so-called flexi-boarders who stay at school between three and five nights a week. Felsted has eight boarding houses, covering the full architectural spectrum from traditional to very modern. Pupils in the Upper 6th – the equivalent of the German Oberstufe – have their own boarding houses, and everyone gets a single room.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Felsted School impresses with a refreshingly progressive ethos and a clear focus on the future. Pupils are not only encouraged to take subjects like Business Studies and Economics, but also to join the popular Young Entrepreneurs Club. Especially noteworthy: the school maintains close ties with the Old Felstonians – alumni working in the City of London. This network opens doors others can only dream of. We have seen very few schools offer anything like it!

In terms of sport, Felsted is right at the top – particularly in hockey, riding and skiing. But the holy trinity of English sport – rugby, cricket and netball – also has a strong presence here. Additional options include swimming, polo, badminton, water polo and tennis.
Every year, pupils enjoy ski trips to Italy, France or Switzerland, while more advanced skiers successfully represent the school at the Independent Schools Ski Championships.

Felsted also has much to offer creative minds. The school’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Music School is truly impressive: a 150-seat concert hall, its own recording studio, a percussion room and 13 teaching spaces provide ideal conditions to nurture musical talent. And the highlight: those who play the piano can practise on a genuine Steinway.

And for those who still want more alongside sport and music, Felsted offers a wealth of choice: over 50 extracurricular activities provide variety – from beekeeping to the school’s own amateur radio station.

Weaknesses

During our last visit, the swimming pool was a bit of a disappointment – quite outdated. New pool, please, Felsted School!

Our Insider Tip

Worried about missing your pet? Don’t be – Felsted has its own farm. Pupils help care for the animals here, which include a snake, a turtle, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs.
