Culford School

Culford School

Bury St. Edmunds, England

Culford School, located in Bury in central England, has made a name for itself with its outstanding tennis programme. The school’s own Tennis Centre is recognised as part of the LTA Regional and Local Player Development Programme and regularly ranks among the best tennis schools in the country. But the sporting opportunities go far beyond tennis: golf, football and swimming are all offered at a high level. The manageable size of the school creates a strong sense of community – boarding pupils are well integrated and enjoy the friendly, open atmosphere on campus. It is a place where sport and togetherness go hand in hand.

We placed 2 pupils here in 2024.

The Details

The Academics

Culford is not particularly selective academically but delivers solid exam results. In 2024, pupils achieved 48 percent grades 9 to 7 in their GCSEs and 42 percent A grades in their A Levels. It is an academically strong school without being overly demanding.

The sciences are well equipped, with impressive school laboratories.

Languages Taught

English as a Foreign Language, French and Spanish.

The Boarding

Half of the pupils board. The school’s four boarding houses are cosy. Pupils usually share rooms with one or two others. Sixth Formers have their own boarding house and are allocated single rooms. The school is making efforts to renovate older units, but occasionally pupils may still live in more dated houses.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

Sport is clearly Culford’s strength. It is no coincidence that the school is among those with the best sports programmes in the UK. Tennis is particularly strong, while football, golf, swimming and dance are quickly catching up thanks to excellent academies. Hockey and riding are also very good and can be further developed through nearby clubs in Bury St. Edmunds.

Culford has a very friendly and supportive atmosphere, thanks in part to its relatively small size and its Methodist roots.

The art department, opened in 2019, is fantastic and adds a creative touch to this very sporty school.

Weaknesses

Culford’s boarding accommodation is perfectly fine, but it could use a bit more charm.

Location

Culford School is located in the quiet village of Culford, just north of Bury St Edmunds – a charming market town with cosy cafés, good restaurants, stylish shopping options and a diverse cultural scene.
