Loretto School

Loretto School, Scotland's oldest boarding school, is first and foremost known for being the best school for golf in the UK. There's much, much more to the school, though: it has consistenly been in the top ten schools for value add in the country, sports is overall to a very high standard, with the school competing nationwide in anything from golf to judo to rugby. The Details

Academics:

A-Levels and GCSEs on offer.

Loretto School is a relatively non-selective school, yet achieved a solid 30% A-grades at A-Levels and 40% 9-7 grades at GCSEs in 2023. The school is famed for having one of the highest value added scores in the country.

Languages on offer: Latin, Greek, German, Spanish and French.

Boarding:

60% of pupils are full boarders. Six boarding houses with distinctive personalities. All cozy and within a five minute walk from school. Senior boarders share with one other or get single rooms.

Weekend trips for entertainment and cultural outings to Edinburgh or simply to the cinema in Musselburgh.

Exeat weekends exist, but are not compulsory.

Strengths:

So, let's start with the golf - Loretto is one of THE golf schools in Europe. The best and most promising flock Loretto's famed Golf Academy with state-of-the-art facilities including indoor center with video analysis and Trackman.

Sports in general is very good here, especially lacrosse, rugby, hockey and tennis. Other sports include swimming, judo, football and dance (new dance studio!).

Lots of great extracurricular activities! We especially love the Borealis Society where 6th formers go on extensive sporting and academic expeditions to northern countries like Iceland and Greenland. The experience is uniquely educational and bonding for those who go.

The school has a refreshingly down-to-earth atmosphere, great pastoral care and very caring teachers. Also, due to the relatively small size of the school, a real family vibe exists where everyone knows everyone.

Weaknesses:

We cannot fault Loretto School. The school does exactly what it says it does!
