Gresham's School

Gresham's School, located in Holt in Norfolk, is a beautiful, down-to-earth countryside boarding school. Gresham's School has a real campus-feel thanks to the gorgeous cricket lawns up-front, surrounded by the school buildings and boarding houses. The school is a little off-piste, but its good teachers, great sports, outdoors possibilities, arts and drama make this a destination that definitely merits a visit.

The Details

The Academics:

The school offers GCSEs, A-Levels and the IB.

Gresham's School is doing well academically. In 2023, its GCSE results yielded 49% 9-7 grades, its A-Levels 45% A-grades and an IB average of 35.7 points. Given that the school is only moderately selective, this is a set of very decent results.

The SEN provision at Gresham's School is strong. With about 20% of pupils receiving support for mild dyslexia or dyspraxia, the school is well staffed with part- and full-time staff devoting time to help.

Boarding:

65% of pupils are full-time boarders. The boarding houses are close to campus (2mins walk on average) and have a comfortable, homely feel. Pupils share with between one and three others up until U6th. In U6th, most pupils have single rooms.

Exeat weekends exist but are not compulsory.

Strengths:

Gresham's School has a very strong drama department. The school's Auden Theatre is a highly professional venue and the heart of the school's theatre productions. With at least three major productions a year, pupils can get involved both on stage or as technical crew behind the scences. The amazing,oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman graced Gresham's theatre boards, if you need a reference for how good drama here is!

Gresham's School makes full use of its rural location. Outdoors pursuits are fantastic here with pupils going trekking, sailing and climbing on a regular basis. The school's Outdoor Activity Center, complete with climbing wall, zip line and obstacle course, makes it even more attractive. The location has a further beneficial side-effect - far from London, this is a school that is refreshingly unselfconscious, unpretentious and down-to-earth!

The school has a strong sports offering. Next to the classics rugby, hockey, cricket and netball, the school offers very good shooting, sailing, fencing, cycling, swimming, tennis and squash.

Lastly, the art and design-technology departments have lots to offer. We saw some very impressive paintings, textiles and design prototypes last time we visited, and our pupils praise the passionate, creative teachers.
