Denstone College

Denstone College, located in the east of Staffordshire near the village of Denstone, is a modern, friendly, and unpretentious school that stands out with its great sporting achievements, especially in rugby. The school was founded in 1873 as a Christian foundation by the English priest Nathaniel Woodard and is still owned by the Woodard Corporation today. Woodard's educational concept is based on seeing the pupil as a whole and discovering and developing the unique potential in each individual. Denstone College combines tradition with modern educational approaches and offers GCSEs and A-Levels. In particular, the A-Level results of the last three years show that subjects such as Art, DT (Design and Technology), Economics, History, Politics, and Spanish perform particularly well.
Von Bülow Education placed 2 pupils here in 2023.

What we think
Denstone is a lovely school that currently flies under the radar somewhat. Definitely worth a visit!

The Details

The Academics:

Denstone College is very popular due to its excellent science department, relatively low tuition fees, and extensive sports offerings.

GCSEs and A-Levels are offered. In 2023, 42 percent of students achieved grades 9 to 7 in their GCSEs, and 33 percent achieved A/A at A-Level (62 percent A-B).

The Sixth Form LIFE Programme at Denstone College, a weekly program for Lower Sixth Form students, focuses on the development of leadership qualities, innovation, future readiness, and entrepreneurship. Topics include workplace behavior, social media use, digital skills, negotiation, entrepreneurship, and community involvement. The goal is to prepare students for life after Denstone College and to provide them with a holistic experience that goes beyond the choice of their subject of study.

The Boarding

Denstone College has four boarding houses where children from 10 nations live: North House, South House, Moss Moor, and Hartley House. The younger students are housed in South House and Hartley House. The older students live in North House and Moss Moor.

North House offers spacious and well-equipped, bright communal areas for boys in the Lower and Upper Sixth, including computer workstations, a lounge, a large kitchen, and an open bar. Each room also has its own bathroom and access to study areas.

In Moss Moor, the residence for female students from the Third to Upper Sixth, there are many amenities. In addition to individual kitchens, there are communal areas for cozy gatherings in the evening.

Each boarding house has dedicated house parents and staff, all of whom are collectively responsible for the well-being of the boarding students. In Moss Moor, a particularly devoted dog also ensures the students feel well taken care of.

Strengths

Great value for money! With over 100 extracurricular activities per week, from numerous sports with regular tournaments to creative arts with musicals, festivals, and exhibitions, the school offers an inspiring environment. The tuition fees are relatively inexpensive compared to other schools.

In sports, Denstone College is particularly strong in rugby. The school also enjoys an excellent reputation in hockey and cricket. In addition to sports such as netball, athletics, football, climbing, lacrosse, or tennis, Denstone also offers niche sports like judo. The boarding school's sports facilities include a sports hall with a climbing wall, a well-equipped gym, a swimming pool, spacious grass and all-weather pitches, excellent cricket and netball facilities, a 400-meter gravel running track, and a 9-hole golf course.

We love Denstone's creative offering. Whether it's classical art, product design, or music, creative pupils will be happy here!

Weaknesses:

There could always be a few more boarders at Denstone. The school does make a big effort to integrate boarders!

The Location
Denstone College is located near the idyllic town of Denstone and impresses with its Victorian-Gothic exterior amidst the green pastures of Staffordshire, from where the Staffordshire Bull Terrier also originates. The historic building on the over 100-hectare site radiates security and permanence, while the interior, with its wide corridors, modern rooms, and an imposing chapel, reflects the dynamism of a vibrant community.
