Scarborough College
Scarborough College
Scarborough, England
Set in a stunning location on the Yorkshire Coast in the north of England, Scarborough College is just a short walk from the South Bay beach and the town centre. What we love most is its relaxed, positive atmosphere. The school offers the IB Diploma as its senior qualification and has an excellent reputation in sport – especially cricket and hockey.

The Details
The Academics
With its non-selective admissions, Scarborough College takes the pressure off pupils that comes with a purely academic environment. It’s an ideal choice for those drawn to sport, the arts and a wide variety of outdoor activities.
Both GCSEs and the IB Diploma are on offer, with consistently strong results. In 2024, the IB cohort achieved an average score of 33 – well above the global average of 30.
Support is excellent for pupils with additional needs, including SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and LSN (Learning Support Needs). The school provides help for conditions such as Asperger’s, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, as well as for hearing or physical impairments.
Languages Taught
German, French, Spanish and Mandarin.
The Boarding
Around 155 boarders from 30 different nationalities make up the boarding community. Scarborough’s three boarding houses are set in a quiet residential area just outside the town centre and within walking distance of campus. The Georgian and Victorian houses are striking, cosy and give a real sense of home.
Up to 20 younger boys live in Denys Crews, while Bunkory offers 32 en-suite single rooms for Senior and Sixth Form boys. Willersley, home to up to 34 girls, has a welcoming common room, art room, library and piano, spread over three floors with a mix of room types – including some singles.
Weaponness is the largest of the houses, home to around 60 Sixth Form pupils. Most have single rooms, and many enjoy en-suites, usually reserved for Upper Sixth students.

Strenghts & Weaknesses
Strenghts
Scarborough College is one of the more affordable boarding schools in the UK – without compromising on quality. Great value for money, in our view!
The school offers the International Baccalaureate as its senior qualification, meaning pupils joining in Year 12 can study six subjects (as opposed to the four typically offered at A level schools). On the sporting side, hockey training really stands out. And for those with a creative streak, there’s plenty on offer too – from music technology and composition to performance opportunities and masterclasses with professionals.
Scarborough often allows shorter stays from as little as two terms, combined with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that helps pupils feel at home from day one.
Weaknesses
Visually, the school may not be quite as striking as some other British boarding schools – but the facilities themselves are in excellent condition.
The Location
Scarborough College sits above the South Bay of Scarborough, with excellent rail, road and air links. The town itself is full of character: an ancient castle, sandy beaches and a busy harbour create a wonderfully adventurous setting. Add to that museums, a colourful market hall, parks, a theatre and a charming old town – and you’ve got a location that’s hard to beat.
