Queen’s College Taunton, founded in 1843, is a long-established school in Somerset that combines impressive Victorian architecture with an exceptionally broad and vibrant educational offering. Set within approximately 15 hectares of grounds, the school provides an environment where academic learning, performing arts, design and technology, sport and a wide range of co-curricular activities are closely interwoven. Despite its Methodist foundations, Queen’s is anything but restrained; the school is particularly known for its creative energy, with the performing arts standing out as a true hallmark.

The Academics
Queen’s College delivers strong academic outcomes alongside a broad subject offering. In 2025, 43% of GCSE results were graded 9–7, while at A Level 32% achieved A/A and 57% A–B*. Pupils can choose from 24 different A Level subjects, with Mathematics and Psychology among the most popular. Over 95% of leavers progress to university, including regular offers from Oxford or Cambridge. Particularly valued is the school’s extensive outdoor learning programme, which clearly sets Queen’s apart from many other senior schools.

The Boarding
Boarding at Queen’s is lively and extends well into the weekends. A varied programme of activities and trips – ranging from walks on the beach and go-karting to shared outings beyond the campus – helps to build a strong sense of community. In the Sixth Form, pupils have the option of single rooms, with bathrooms shared.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strenghts
The school is particularly strong in music and performing arts, with a long tradition of high-quality productions and participation from over 75% of senior pupils. Many take part in regional festivals and regularly perform at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe. At the same time, Queen’s encourages pupils to challenge themselves physically and try new activities – from kayaking, climbing and caving to fencing, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding, as well as hip hop, dance and debating.
Weakness
Not all areas have yet been modernised, but the completed renovations set a very high standard.

Queen’s College Taunton is located on the edge of the historic market town of Taunton in the heart of Somerset, set within beautiful countryside. The campus, with its striking Gothic main building, offers views across the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, both designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South West England.
