Tonbridge School is a very academic school and highly selective. Good grades are essential for a successful application. In 2024, pupils achieved a cool 77% A-grades at A-Level and a stunning 91% 9-7 grades at GCSE. These results put it firmly in the top echelon of schools in the UK.
The school places a lot of emphasis on intellectual stimulation and enrichment outside the classic curriculum. The boys should develop self-reliance, leadership skills and leave school well prepared for a life thereafter. We especially like the digital creativity course, taught in three amazing digital creativity labs.
Languages on offer are French, Spanish, Chinese, Italian and German.
60% of boys board. The seven boarding houses, are arranged along the high-street and are all within a five minute walk from school. Boys share until 6th Form, then get their own rooms.
A special feature of the Tonbridge School boarding experience is that all boys eat in their houses. This fosters a strong community spirit and gives house-parents the opportunity to check in on all boys.
Exeat weekends exist and are compulsory.
No doubt, the school's academic prowess, intellectual stimulation and teaching of life skills. Tonbridge isn't your typical hothouse-environment where the focus is exclusively on churning out top marks. No, it educates for a love of learning and preparedness for the future!
The school's pastoral care is extremely strong. A system of teachers, older boys, house parents and tutors ensure that every boy is well taken care of and happy. The strong in-house community spirit complete with in-house dining further underscores this.
The school is well known for its amazing sports. Especially the rugby, hockey and cricket teams are feared up and down the country. But the offer of sports is much broader of course with anything from ultimate frisbee to sailing on offer.
The close proximity to London increasingly makes Tonbridge School a popular choice with wealthy Londoners. It has been known that pupils on occasion flaunt their wealth at school.
