Shrewsbury School, set in 100 acres of pristinely beautiful playing fields just outside picturesque market town Shrewsbury, is well known for being a very happy, inclusive school. Pupils from all backgrounds and with diverse abilities are really given the opportunity to thrive. Next to a great variety of extracurricular activities, the school has a dedicated SEN team that supports pupils with their academic work. Music and art deserve a special mention at this school, as does great rowing and cross-country running.

The Details

The Academics:

A-Levels and GCSEs on offer.

Shrewsbury is an academic and selective school. Its exam results in 2024 were very good, with 43% of A-grades at A-Level and 54% 9-7 grades at GCSE.

Shrewsbury is well-known for its great offer of academic enrichment courses, including everything from accounting to debating.

Languages on offer are German, French, Spanish and Latin.

Boarding:

80% of pupils board.

11 Boarding houses, each with dedicated houseparents and matron. The houses are very cozy and in very good shape. Pupils share until 6th form, when they get single rooms.

Exeat weekends exist and are compulsory.

Strengths:

Shrewsbury School is a beautiful, very friendly school with a proper boarding school feel and a refreshing quirkiness about it. Its most famous alumn is famous scientist Charles Darwin and in his honour the school has its very own biology museum right next to the science labs.

Sports is very strong here, rowing especially, complete with own boathouse and special training room!

Music is another key strength with a great orchestra, several ensembles, choirs, jazz-and rock bands. Amazingly, all pupils are offered free music lessons for an instrument of their choice. Amazing!

We were very impressed by the school's vibrant design and technology department, which sports 3D printers, lazer cutters and other essential tools to build anything from innovative furniture to electric cars.
