It’s hard to ignore artificial intelligence these days. It writes texts, analyses data and answers complex questions in seconds. It’s no surprise, then, that many families now turn to ChatGPT, Claude & Co. as a first step when searching for the right boarding school.
But as impressive as these AI assistants may be, when it comes to the niche world of British boarding schools, the information available online is often not detailed enough, hidden behind paywalls, or simply outdated. And some of the most important aspects are not available online at all, such as:
- the proportion of German students at a school
- the actual level of sports programmes
- entry points
- language offerings
How many German students?
One of the key questions for many families is how many German-speaking students are currently at a school and in which year groups and programmes (A Levels or IB).
For families who want their children to truly immerse themselves in English, the ratio between English-speaking and German-speaking students is crucial. Yet this information is not published on school websites and is therefore not accessible to AI.
What Level Are We Talking About?
AI can tell you which sports are offered at a school. But when it comes to the actual standard and details such as links with local clubs, it often falls short.
In most cases, we know how strong a programme really is, because we visit schools regularly and speak directly with our students about their experiences.

Entry Points
Most British boarding schools have clearly defined entry points (typically Year 9 or Year 12) and these are the ones AI will identify.
Does that mean entry into Year 10 is not an option? Not necessarily. However, it usually depends on current availability at the school. And that is something we clarify directly with our partner schools.
Languages
The same applies to classical languages. If a school website states “Greek offered”, AI will interpret this as a well-established subject.
In reality, this often means that Ancient Greek is only available if there is sufficient demand, sometimes only in Sixth Form, and sometimes as a small additional class.
What Really Matters
Our work with families is a dialogue. We listen, ask questions and help prioritise what truly matters. Just as importantly, we highlight aspects that families may not have considered at all.
Of course, Latin and ballet need to fit. But far more important is the feel of a school: How supportive are the houseparents? How happy do the pupils seem? How well do international and British students mix? What kind of boarding culture emerges?
These are things AI cannot assess. To understand them, you need to be there – to walk the campus, speak to pupils and staff, and experience the atmosphere first-hand.

The Personality of a Child
What AI also cannot do is develop a real sense of a child.
An introverted child may not feel comfortable in a highly extrovert environment, while another may thrive in exactly that setting. An experienced advisor, however, can pick up on these nuances in conversation and identify a school that truly suits the child’s personality.
AI and Personal Advice
So does this mean AI is useless? Quite the opposite.
ChatGPT, Claude and similar tools are excellent for initial research. Use them at the beginning of your search. Ask general questions, explore different schools and get a feel for the British boarding system. AI can give you a helpful starting point and point you in the right direction.
But when it comes to making the actual decision, AI cannot replace personal experience.
Or, put simply:
Take a look at what AI suggests. And then talk to us.
Because while a list can be generated, finding the right school is a deeply personal process.
