In most German federal states, the summer holidays have already begun. Normally, this is the time when families are thinking about holidays, relaxation and taking a break from school. But for some, the final school report has sparked very different conversations. The grades were not what everyone had hoped for, English has become a particular concern, and suddenly a question arises that seemed unthinkable just a few weeks ago:
Could a term or even a full academic year at a British boarding school be exactly the fresh start my child needs?
Is It Too Late to Apply?
At first glance, it may seem as though the opportunity has already passed. In reality, however, we successfully place students at British boarding schools every summer.
Applying at this stage does mean overcoming a few additional hurdles. At the same time, though, it can open doors that simply were not available a few months earlier.
The Challenges of a Late Application
Families who only begin considering a British boarding school now are certainly not starting under the easiest circumstances. Many schools have already filled their places for the coming academic year. There is often little time left for detailed school visits, visa applications need to be submitted at short notice, and for the children themselves the decision involves a major change. Within just a few weeks, they may have to say goodbye to their current school, their friends and everything that feels familiar before beginning an entirely new chapter in September.

Why Applying Late Can Also Be an Opportunity
At the same time, this is exactly where new opportunities arise.
Every year, places become available shortly before the start of the school year. Sometimes families change their plans at short notice, sometimes visa or travel arrangements fall through, and sometimes students withdraw for personal reasons. As a result, individual places open up—not only at smaller schools but occasionally even at highly regarded boarding schools such as Sevenoaks and other leading schools.
For families who are flexible, this can be an exceptional opportunity.
Schools Are Often Looking for the Right Match
Another advantage is that Admissions teams understand that summer applications are often made under considerable time pressure. The same high standards apply as at any other time of year, of course. At the same time, schools are often particularly solution-focused during this period and keen to fill their remaining places with students who are genuinely the right fit.
This does not mean that gaining admission suddenly becomes easier. It does, however, mean that applications may sometimes be considered with a slightly more open mind. If a student is a good match for the school, there is still every chance of receiving an offer.
