Badminton School, located just outside of the university town Bristol, is an institution amongst the great British boarding schools. It is one of the oldest girls schools in the country, and esteemed for its academic prowess, top notch music, the arts and competitive sports. The school is selective, so good grades are a must!
The Details
The Academics
Badminton School is a very academic school with great results: in 2024 69% of GCSE grades were 9-7 grades and over 60% of A-Levels were A grades. That puts Badminton School firmly in the top 20 of UK schools. Needless to say, this result is at least in part, achieved by being selective.
We love the schools academic development outside the classroom. Y8s and Y9s are offered a 10-week STEM experience working with engineering and manufacturing companies as part of Go4SET and some girls even get to go to CERN.
Languages Taught
German, French, Spanish and Latin.
The Boarding
54% of girls board. Most girls share rooms with one other girl. The three boarding houses are cozy and the pastoral care is excellent. Given the small size of the school, the boarding community is close-knit and integrative.
On weekends, the girls have vibrant Bristol right at their doorstep for cultural and shopping outings.
Strengths & Weaknesses
The Strengths
Badminton School's academic prowess is an undoubtled strength. The fact that this goes beyond the classroom, with exciting activies underscores this.
A broad range of excellent sports including hockey, tennis, swimming, sailing, equestrian, kick-boxing and water polo ensure that there is something for everyone.
The creative offer around music, drama and art is extremely good, too. Most girls play at least one instrument and there are orchestras, bands and choirs to participate in. Six major drama productions a year. Art happens in a gorgeous department space and girls can do textiles, ceramics, painting and photography.
The small size of the school creates a very familiar, close-knit atmosphere.
The Weaknesses
The integration of boarder and day girls has not always been as good as it could have been in the past.

Badminton School is a no doubt a fine girl's school, but not for the academically faint-hearted.
Bristol is Banksy’s hometown and everywhere you can discover small, hidden street art gems. The experience is most exciting when you simply wander around or join an unofficial tour that also leads into courtyards and side streets.
