Eton College's academic success is stunning:in 2022, its I/GCSE results yielded 94% 9-7 grades and its A-Levels 84% A-grades. For GCSE results we don't know better than this.
Most popular subjects are maths, economics, history, physics, further maths and chemistry. We met the very affable, inspirational head of history Dror Yuravlivker on our last visit to Eton. If other teachers are anything like him, we understand the reputation for teaching excellence that Eton enjoys!
Eton College offers Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Arabic, Japanese and Italian.
All boys board and are housed in 25 boarding houses with 50 boys each. The houses are cozy and practical. Not sure what we expected, but no golden faucets here!
In-house eating du jour, except a few exceptions. This fosters an even stronger connection to one's boarding house.
Exeat weekends are compulsory.
Eton College is an academic powerhouse. The results are exceptionally good. The teaching is first-rate across the board. The school's academic offer goes beyond the classroom with a broad range of intellectual, creative and entertaining activities.
It's a boys school, so the teaching is adapted to what young boys need in order to thrive and succeed at school and beyond.
Sports is amazing. Beyond the classics cricket, hockey and rugby (which are all played to the highest standard, of course!), there's a huge range of options e.g rowing, fencing, football, rounders, golf, shooting, sailing, and of course Eton's own "wall game", a form of rugby.
Music is just as amazing - several orchestras, string quartetts, jazz bands, rock bands and, of course, the famous Chapel Choir.
Drama is another strong point, which is evidence that life at Eton College doesn't all happen in the classroom and library.
Last but not least, the arts are fabulous too. We saw bright art rooms with some truly amazing paintings, drawings and ceramics. The school has its own 'artists in residence' it hires on a yearly basis to teach the boys the ropes.
Eton College has gotten a lot of bad press of late for allegedly producing entitled, elitist men like the politicians Boris Johnson, David Cameron and Jacob Rees-Mogg. It is true that Eton College is an incredibly privileged place and that the boys live in a bubble. This criticism can be made against all other British boarding schools, too, surely?
